WizardsBullets 10-38

While we are all still recovering from our Super Bowl hangovers - which is why the Super Bowl should be moved to Saturdays - it's being reported this week that Bobby Knight is interested in the men's basketball coaching vacancy at Georgia. And it would be good for the game to have the winningest men's college basketball coach in history with 902 victories back on the sidelines - especially at an NCAA major school like Georgia.

I must confess that I'm a Knight fan.  He's intense and his temper frightening at times. Once while coaching at Army, during halftime of a game he slugged my buddy's father (Dick Murray) who was playing for him at the time. But despite never wearing a mustache, to me Knight has always stood for what was good in college basketball: teamwork, discipline, graduating players, vulgarity, white hair, plaid jackets, and of course, winning.

It was last year, almost to the day, that Knight announced he was stepping down at Texas Tech, and it saddened me. Maybe it's because I enjoyed watching Knight's team run the "flex" offense flawlessly. Maybe it's because most of his players are loyal to a fault to the man.  Or, maybe it's because I played a highly effective bench warming role for a high school hoops coach named "Mad Dog" Murray Ross, who was the toughest, nastiest SOB I'd ever met. And when I look back at high school now, despite how scared of Coach Ross I was at the time, I respect him more than anyone who taught me during those seven and a half high school years.

Sure Coach Ross threw chairs through the locker room that sparked upon contact with the floor. He slapped his forehead with the force of a hammer hitting a nail, just to make a point (what point, I'm not sure). He would say things like, "The freshmen are so passive, they get out of the shower to take a piss." He told black players who grew up in the suburbs they weren't black because they weren't hip-hop enough. He made us run wind sprints before a game in front of the crowd because he caught us screwing around in the locker room. And sure he said the phrase, "You've got to dance with the girl you came with," at least eight different ways ("You gotta dance on the come your girl with!"). But Murray was one of a kind and a tremendous basketball mentor and teacher.

Maybe my memories of Murray are why I respect and will miss Coach Knight so much.

The reality is that Bobby Knight threw chairs, choked players, slapped his son, cracked my buddy's dad in the face, he was vulgar, and yes he could be extremely arrogant. But did he earn the right to be arrogant? Was he one of the smartest basketball tacticians of the past 50 years? Did he understand the college game as well as anyone? Does he have a great sense of humor?  And did I mention he can be vulgar?

Yes to all of these.

The funny thing is that most people I know who do not like Knight and think he should not be allowed to coach again never played competitive athletics. Clearly, it would be unfair to paint a broad brush and say that's why they could not understand the beauty of Coach Knight. But I'm guessing it plays a role.

Regardless, I'd love to see Knight back on the sideline at NCAA D-1 power like Georgia to continue his legacy as a great teacher and winner.

Ridicularity Round Up

  • Pleased to see Michael Phelps hitting the pipe. Very nice. Now we'll see him crawl back into the good graces of the American public. Oprah, here comes Mike!

  • Last week I wrote about the importance of depth on NBA rosters as it relates to playoff success following the long, 82-game season. I've pimped the Los Angeles Lakers as my pick to win the title this season as their depth is impressive. We'll see how well my prediction holds up now that center Andrew Bynum will miss up to 12 weeks after tearing the MCL in his right knee.

  • Speaking of LA, Kobe's 61 last night was pretty impressive. Along with the Celtics dropping 74 in the first half against Dallas 10 days ago, it's probably the most impressive feat of the young season.

  • I expected a terribly boring Super Bowl blow-out and was happy to be wrong as the commercials were terrible.

  • It took the Bullets until late January to reach double digits in wins. And to top things off, last night they allowed Memphis to break its 12-game losing streak. Very big of Washington.

  • Note to NBC: America had no interest in seeing Brenda Warner six times during the second half of the Super Bowl telecast.

  • Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Of The Black (Del Negro) should not get too comfy in his coaching offices. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf went on a rant this weekend - calling the season a "disaster." The only person in the organization he endorsed was GM John Paxon.

  • Another plea to InBevweiser: please stop the Bud Light Drinkability ads. The guy drawing the pictures does not resonate with your target audience. You are entering Coor's Light territory here. Really bad.

Carry on.

Patrick, good point on Bynum. He's entering McGrady territory. And as for Shoelundo's point on Knight's relevance today. You might be right. Clearly, he struggles in recruiting black players and the top 10 players in high school currently are black.

Besides the fact that Knight has done exactly nothing in the tournament except get blown out in the 1st weekend since 1993 and can't recruit in today's environment, sure, he's great. Even as an Indiana fan, it amazes me that nobody seems to be willing to acknowledge that he runs pretty mediocre programs these days. Sure, he was great 20 years ago, but the college game has long since passed him by. Georgia, if you hire him, welcome to the wonderful world of 19-12 seasons with a lopsided 1st round exit.

Is it just me, Doctor, or does Bynum get injured every year?

Hell hath frozen over.

Nice Column Doc, totally agree with you about Knight. If basketball had been my chosen sport I would have wanted to play for him.

Mariano Rivera

In his rookie season on the '95 Yankees, Mariano Rivera recorded 5 saves. That same year, Rivera also recorded 23 pairs of ripped tighty-whities as the prime target of locker room wedgie-wars.
