October 26th, 1982

On this day 27 years ago,
Steve Carlton became baseball's first pitcher to take home 4 Cy Young Awards - which made it increasingly difficult for opposing players to mock his well-groomed man perm.
Carlton's fourth Cy Young Award with the Phillies shot him past Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver and fellow lefty, Sandy Koufax, who all stood atop the Cy Young leader board with 3.
Carlton has since been tied by Greg Maddux (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995) and trumped by Randy Johnson (5: 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) and Roger Clemens (7: 1986, 1987, 1991, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2004).
Impress your co-workers: if you're one of the lucky souls to remember the time when Cy Young Awards were actually handed out in October (because, you know, baseball was already finished), pat yourself on the back. Last year's Cy Young Awards weren't handed out until November 13th. Sheesh. Get it fixed, baseball.
