A preemptive warning to the usual listeners of the JoeSportsFan Show; this is going to be slightly different than our regular weekly antics. We promise the mustache jokes and endless references to "Saved by the Bell" will return next week.

There were some lingering issues and topics that arose from discussions at the "Blogs with Balls" conference in NYC last weekend.  Two fellow panelists, Dan Steinberg (DC Sports Bog) and Greg Wyshynski (Yahoo! Sports "Puck Daddy"), talked with Dan Levy yesterday regarding a number of misconceptions that often emerge when taking polarizing "traditional vs. new school media" stances.  We thought it would serve as a tremendous complement to bring in some external voices; two guys from our local St. Louis areas that enjoy a philosophical discussion or two.

Bernie Miklasz, a friend of ours from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and one of the preeminent sports journalists in the nation.  Print, radio, television.  He's done it all.  Very well.  Among the accolades, he's managed to adapt digital forms of media as a valuable complement to his regular coverage.

And, Will Leitch...you know, that guy.

Bernie Miklasz and Will Leitch

Two guys; different backgrounds, different achievements, both currently playing in the same sandbox, for better of for worse.  Truth be told, they're quite smitten for each other, so we did our best attempting to corral the digital fist pounds and cyber-admiration.

A few of the topics covered:

  • What current/former professional athlete Miklasz/Leitch would pick for their adult mens softball team (got to start it off light, you know).

  • What exactly is "credibility" in modern sports coverage? Does it even matter?

  • Digital tools such as Twitter serving as a complement to traditional media (e.g. print, radio).

  • The mainstream media fear of starting their own website/blog - without the comfort of organizational reputation or reliance on academic degrees.

  • A year removed from the infamous Bissenger/Will Leitch exchange; what, if anything, have we learned?

Excellent points all around, especially Will's bit about the importance of maintaining credibility w/ the fans vs elites and Bernie's point about traditional writers having to raise their game

I'll definitely let one week slide, especially when it's good. We better be back to some sports mustache chatter next week though!!

Way to fill the "softball question quota" this week. It'll do. Seriously though, fantastic so far.

Darrell Brown

While he could vaguely speak the language, Brown never did figure out how to write autograph messages in English.
