December 10, 1971

On this day, the New York Mets traded
Nolan Ryan to the California Angels for 3B Jim Fregosi. Fregosi was an All-Star in six of seven seasons between 1964 and 1970, but he never played more than 150 games for the Mets, and never had a decent season again.
Ryan would go on to strike out 5,714 batters in a Hall of Fame career while Fregosi hit .232 with five homers and 32 RBI in 1972.
The deal remains controversial, and has been cited as one of the worst in Mets history.
Yet somehow, Steve Phillips wasn't involved. Crazy.
